Oliver was elected a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society (FRAS) while serving as a lecturer at University College London (UCL). He contributed to astronomical discussions and journals, including Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. He was a passenger on the same voyage as the famous astrophysicist Arthur Eddington.
