5.Constantinople

Originally it was known as Byzantium,an ancient Greek city.

It is situated on the Bosphorus,in Europe.

The city of Byzantium was re-founded and renamed Constantinople in 330 A.D by the Roman Emperor,Constantine,as the capital of his new Empire.

Constantinople was renamed after Constantine, son of Constantinius Chlorus, Roman Emperor who died in 306 A.D in York, Britain.

Constantine the Great, above, was born in 288 and died in 337 A.D.He became Roman Emperor in 306 A.D.

He was the first of eleven emperors of the Eastern Roman Empire named Constantine.

In the year 313 A.D the Emperor Constantine decreed toleration of Christianity in the Roman Empire.

This brought to an end a long period of persecution and martyrdom of many Christians.

In the mid fourth century much of Constantinople was destroyed by fire.

In 632 A.D the city was rebuilt by the EmperorJustinian(627-565 A.D).

In the year 395 A.D the Roman Empire was divided into two: The Eastern and the Western. The Eastern Roman Empire as such was founded in 395 A.D.

The Byzantium Pope Cyril in around 650 A.D invented written Cyrillicscript. This was of great importance for all the Slav countries from the point of view of communication and culture.

The Eastern Roman Empire based on Constantinople was under attack by the OttomanTurks from 1354 onwards.

In the year 1453 the city of Constantinople and its lands finally fell to the assaults of the OttomanTurks, led by MohammedII and was burnt and destroyed. Much of its accumulated wealth in art treasures and books and fine buildings was lost.

In due course it became the capital city of Turkey until1923 when Angora (Ankara) became the capital.

In 1878 the city of Constantinople, increasingly known by then as Istanbul, was almost captured by the Russian Army under General Skobelev. A British fleet protected it at that time. After a while the period of crisis lessened.

During the Crimean war of 1856 - 1856 Turkey was allied to Great Britain and France. For some time during the war there were British stationed in the city. A Hospital was establishedand run by Miss Florence Nightingale of GreatBritain at Scutari, Constantinople, to nurse wounded soldiers.

The city of Constantinople (Istanbul)for a great many years was the largest city in Turkey. It is so still.

Byzantine Art, Architecture, Literature and Culture generally are of great importance world wide. The influence of Byzantine culture persisted widely down the centuries and continues still.
